Dixi Patel is a pediatric resident at SUNY Downstate Medical Center by day and a singer-songwriter by night.

"I was initially drawn to medicine when I used to tag along with my dad to work and witnessed the accolades and praises he received from his patients and nursing staff. I saw him in his element, providing care and comfort to those in need and I still remember the smiles he left on those around him. I wanted to be just like him. I loved kids and further envisioned my dream of becoming a pediatric physician after spending three weeks in Kenya providing medical care and supplies to orphan children.

It truly opened my eyes to how lucky we are to live in a place that has so much to offer whereas others are scarce to even the most basic of needs such as toothbrushes and thermometers. Global missions became a passion of mine and I have been fortunate enough to travel to and serve not only Africa, but even South America and India. Humbling and gratifying experiences to say the least. They say gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. ‘The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.‘ Maybe one day I can tour and perform in these areas, donate the proceeds towards these children, and provide medical care for them all at the same time. And that’s how I’ll continue along this journey, being so grateful."
