Dr. Hertzel Gerstein is the Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Deputy Director of the Population Health Research Institute. He is also the Director of the Diabetes Research and Care Program at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences.

“In addition to caring for people with diabetes and other endocrine problems, I also design and lead a research program focused on the prevention and treatment of diabetes and its consequences in adults. While caring for patients with diabetes I am always struck by the degree to which the disease impacts their day-to-day life. It is also very gratifying to hear patients’ stories about how much they have enjoyed participating in research studies over the years and more importantly, how new therapies developed through research involving many patients worldwide has actually improved patients’ lives in tangible ways. I would say that my main goal is to continue doing research that identifies and tests therapies for diabetes that truly make a difference to patients’ lives while collaborating with like-minded colleagues around the world.

Whereas the Canadian healthcare system is certainly not perfect it is fundamentally an excellent system. It could be improved by facilitating the way that different parts of the system interact with and communicate with each other. What is most important is that the public, single payer model be retained and that government and Canadians realize that it should be improved but not dismantled.”
