Dr. Suzanna Lekht is a remarkable orthodontist working at Village Orthodontics in Mississauga Ontario. She continuously strives to provide her patients with the best experience in dental care, so they can ultimately share their beautiful smiles with the world.

“Orthodontics is a subspecialty of dentistry called Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. To become an orthodontist, one has to go to dental school for 4 years, then complete a 3-year residency for the additional training in orthodontics. It is a profession that deals with correcting malocclusions and aligning teeth to improve the function and esthetics of a smile.

Learning and innovation are an everyday aspect of a lot of professions, including mine. Interceptive treatment, growth modification, clear aligner therapy, laser soft tissue recontouring and skeletal anchorage are all part of my specialty that I incorporate in my practice, in addition to utilizing conventional braces. I am always taking continuing education courses and reading articles on most recent studies and advances in orthodontics. I think that continued learning is essential to being a well-rounded healthcare professional.

I am so fortunate to be a part of something that brings happiness to people. Oftentimes, people are hesitant or even afraid of going to the dentist, but with orthodontics it is usually the opposite!

On a daily basis, I am a witness to seeing my patients see their new smiles after completing their treatment and their reactions are special and unique. One particular instance stands out to me, is when an adult patient I treated had her braces removed. After we took her braces off, with tears in her eyes, she said,  “I never used to smile before. Now, I won’t stop!” Something like this is so touching and has so much meaning for me on a professional, as well as a personal level.

I do believe healthcare should be a basic human right for everyone. Every person, irrespective of their financial need, deserves to have the ability to see a doctor to address their pain or ailment.

In a ‘perfect world of healthcare’ I think being able to receive care in a timely fashion is paramount. In dentistry it is simpler, oftentimes, due to the privatized nature of practice. In medicine, wait times are often an issue, which I would want to improve.

I think a major stigma that is associated with dentistry, in particular, is that there will be a lot of pain involved. One in three people avoids seeing their dentist due to a fear of being in pain. What is important to understand is that good oral healthcare is such an important part of one’s overall health! Preventive and regular care by a dentist can lead to a healthy smile and eliminate any fear of pain or discomfort for most people!

I truly LOVE my job! Creating smiles is the immediate result of my profession, however, it is the overall improvement in self-image that I believe is lifelong.

A smile is part of a ‘universal language’ that everyone can understand. A confident smile is a gateway to more interaction and opportunity to create so much good in this world. It is so fulfilling for me to know that I can be a part of that!”
