Dr. Michael Wong is an exceptional physician in Ontario. He runs his own private practise clinic, while also contributing time to work at the Mississauga Hospital, an extension of Trillium Health Partners. His approachability, diligence, and initiative have transformed the lives of numerous patients. Furthermore, his mentorship and wisdom have guided young, aspiring physicians along their journeys in the field of medicine.
“I am a family physician, which is the first point of contact for patients and the one who
oversees and integrates care throughout the different stages of one’s life: physical,
mental and emotional. I have also been fortunate enough to work as a hospitalist and an
emergency room physician for 16 years; this has helped me to experience a different
realm of medicine. Recently, my interest has been in teaching the next generation of
doctors.
One of the biggest challenges with the Canadian health care system is waiting times for
non emergent health care services. This is a theme that we, in healthcare will all agree
upon, but the solutions are much more complex and varied. One of the issues is health
care members traditionally work for the common goal of caring for a patient separately
and not always as a cohesive unit. Community physicians, homecare, hospitals and long-
term care facilities all function as independent units to the care of individuals. An
example is that many seniors wait in hospitals for a long term care facility for months. In
healthcare, we have been slow to adopt information technology to readily share and
access information. The future involves investing in information technology to help
streamline some of these processes.
The best parts of my job are the relationships and the trust that is built over the years with
my patients. I have known some patients from birth and now to young men and women; I
feel my role is not only to care for but also be an advisor, support in tough times and a
trusted role in their lives. It is this integration of care in a long term patient-physician
relationship that is truly fulfilling.”
